It’s the time of year when we can reflect on the highs and lows of the past year, as well as looking forward to the new year with fresh motivations and new goals. “I am going to improve my language skills” is a common new year’s resolutions that people make. If it’s your resolution in 2025 to improve your English fluency, we are here to help you make it happen!
Rather than setting general goals such as ‘I will improve my English’, here at Intrepid English we strongly believe in the importance of setting SMART goals. SMART goals are more focused, and allow us to really track the progress of our goals. In today’s post, we will explain what exactly SMART goals are, so that you can set your own SMART English goals for the coming year!
At the bottom of the blog post, be sure to download your free 2025 Study Planner, where you can fill in and track your goals for the coming year.
What are SMART goal?
S- Specific
Goals should be specific, and not too general. For example, “I want to travel more” is not a very specific goal. “I want to travel to xyz city in the summertime” is more specific.
Some examples of specific English learning goals:
- Pass an exam
- Give a presentation
- Submit an assignment
M – Measurable
It’s important that we can measure our goals, to check that we are making progress with them.
Some examples of measurable English learning goals:
- Score 8 in my IELTS exam
- Present for 30 minutes
- Read 100 words
A – Achievable
SMART goals are achievable, so they should be challenging and push you out of your comfort zone, while also being realistic.
Some examples of achievable English learning goals:
- Have a conversation with a native speaker
- Read one book in English
- Improve my IELTS score by one band
R – Relevant
Make sure your goals are relevant to you and your own personal reasons for learning English and how you want to use it.
Some examples of relevant English learning goals:
- Watch and understand a TED Talk (relevant to English listening skills)
- Read an English book related to my profession (relevant to personal career development and English reading skills)
T – Timely
It’s important to also put a time limit on our goals. This helps us to focus more, feel motivated, and get them done!
Some examples of timely English learning goals:
- …by the end of this year
- …by the end of June
- …every month this year
