Reported Questions with ‘Ask’

Kate July 23, 2020

In this section of the course we will learn how to report questions using the reporting verb ask.

In section one we learnt that we do not use an object after ‘said’ but we do use an object after ‘tell’. After ask, we can indicate the listener with an object pronoun, or we can omit them. It is optional.

So, the following two sentences are both correct:

Original question: “Do you like romantic comedies?”

Reported question option 1: She asked me if I liked romantic comedies.

Option 2: She asked if I liked romantic comedies.

As you can see, just as with reporting statements, we should alter verbs accordingly with sequence of tenses when reporting questions.
