New Year, New Vocabulary: 12 Words to Kickstart Your English Learning in 2025

Perhaps you’ve decided that this year is going to be the year that you really focus on your English learning goals and get confident with speaking English! For today’s blog post, we are kicking off the new year with some useful and relevant vocabulary related to hopes and goals for the new year.

1. Resolution (noun)

Meaning: A firm decision to do or not do something.

Example: “One of my New Year’s resolutions is to quit smoking.”

2. Progress (noun/verb)

Meaning: Forward movement toward a goal or an improvement in something.

Examples: “You have made a lot of progress in the last three months.”

“We are progressing slowly but steadily towards our goals.”

3. Renewal (noun)

Meaning: The process of starting something again or improving it.

Example: “The new year is a time for personal renewal and growth.”

4. Fresh start (noun phrase)

Meaning: A new beginning or opportunity to leave the past behind.

Example: “I’m excited for a fresh start in 2025!”

5. Motivated (adjective)

Meaning: Feeling a strong reason or desire to do something.

Example: “Having a study partner can help you to stay motivated.”

6. Reflection (noun)  

Meaning: Serious thought or consideration, especially looking back on past experiences.

Example: “The end of the year is a time for reflection on our accomplishments.”

7. Perspective (noun)

Meaning: A particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

Example: “The new year gives us a chance to change our perspective and approach challenges differently.”

8. Growth (noun)  

Meaning: The process of developing or improving.

Example: “Personal growth is often the result of overcoming challenges.”

9. Gratitude (noun)  

Meaning: The quality of being thankful and showing appreciation.

Example: “Start the new year with gratitude for everything you’ve achieved.”

10. Transformation (noun)

Meaning: A thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance.

Example: “The new year can be a time for personal transformation.”

11. Achieve (verb)

Meaning: To accomplish something through effort and skill.

Example: “I was so pleased that I was able to achieve a B2 level in the exam.”

12. Committed (adjective)

Meaning: To describe someone being dedicated to a cause or activity.

Example: “The animal charity is committed to finding forever homes for all of the dogs in their care.”
