When reporting a question that is more open i.e one that uses a question word such as who, what ,where, when etc we use the following structure:

Subject + Reporting Verb (ASKED) + [Object] + Question Word + Reported question.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples:

Original Question: “What time is your train leaving tomorrow?”

Reported Question: She asked me what time my train was leaving the next day.

Original Question: “Where did you go on holiday?”

Reported Question: He asked where I had gone on holiday.

Think about the last time you had a job interview. What questions did they ask? What did you answer? Write down how you would report this conversation now.

Alternatively, find a video of a chat show interview on YouTube. What questions did the chat show host ask, and how were they answered?

Allow yourself 20-30 minutes to complete this activity.

When you’re finished, you can book a one-to-one lesson with an Intrepid English Teacher to practise this.
