Verb + infinitive

The following verbs follow the reporting structure of verb + infinitive.

agree, decide, offer, promise, threaten

Let’s take a look at some examples:

“I would love to come to your dinner party!”

She agreed to come to my dinner party.

“OK, thanks for your advice everyone. After a lot of thought I’m going to apply to UCL.”

She decided to apply to UCL.

“I won’t forget to bring the present. I promise.”

She promised not to forget the present.

“Would you like some help with your homework? I’ve got a free hour later.”

She offered to help me with my homework.

“If I hear of any more incidents like this, I will cancel the end of year prom.”

The headteacher threatened to cancel the prom if the students didn’t behave.
