If you have already been introduced to this topic, you have probably already studied the verbs \u2018say\u2019 and \u2018tell\u2019, but maybe you want to expand your vocabulary to use other reporting verbs, and make your English speech sound more like a native speaker&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an introduction to this topic, check out our previous blog post on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.intepidenglish.co.uk\/what-is-reported-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> reported speech and how to use sequence of tenses<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s blog post, we\u2019ll look at eight alternative verbs to report speech in English, and how to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-13462716\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1762794\/13462716-eight-useful-verbs-for-reporting-speech.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-13462716&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ask-for-questions\">Ask (for questions)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common verb for reporting questions is \u2018ask\u2019. After ask, we can indicate the listener with an object pronoun, or we can omit it. It is optional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When reporting questions that have a yes or no answer we use the following structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subject + Reporting Verb (ASKED) + [Object] + Whether OR If + Reported question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Question: <em>\u201cDo you prefer dogs or cats?\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reported Question: She asked us whether we preferred dogs or cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When reporting a question that uses a question word such as who, what ,where, when etc we use the following structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subject + Reporting Verb (ASKED) + [Object] + Question Word + Reported question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Question: <em>\u201cWhere did you go on holiday?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reported Question: He asked where I had gone on holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/intrepidenglish.co.uk\/membership-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intrepid English Members<\/a> can learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/lessons\/reported-questions-with-ask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting questions<\/a> in this section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/courses\/reported-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reported Speech course<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ask-for-requests\">Ask (for requests)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We can also use \u2018ask\u2019 to report requests, following this structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subject + asked + object (receiver of the request) + to + verb + request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To report a negative request, add \u2018not\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subject + asked + object + not to + verb + request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: <em>\u201cPlease could you close the door?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She asked me to close the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cPlease don\u2019t step on the grass.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They asked us not to step on the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Intrepid English Members can learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/lessons\/reported-requests-and-commands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting requests and commands<\/a> in this section of the <a href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/courses\/reported-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reported Speech<\/a> course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-admit-deny\">Admit\/Deny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These verbs can be used in a couple of ways. We can use the structure of subject + admit\/deny + [that] + report, or we can use subject + admit\/deny + gerund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOK, OK, I did it! I ate the last cookie. I\u2019m sorry, it just looked so delicious!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He admitted that he had eaten the last cookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, he admitted eating the last cookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about. I wasn\u2019t at the party, I was at home that night.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He denied that he had been at the party that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, he denied being at the party that night. Or, he denied having been at the party that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-promise\">Promise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone makes a promise to us, we can report it two ways: subject + promise + [that] + report, or subject + promise + infinitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI will love you in sickness and in health.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his wedding vows, he promised that he would love his husband in sickness and in health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his wedding vows, he promised to love his husband in sickness and in health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-threaten\">Threaten<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another verb that we can use with an infinitive. The structure is as follows: subject + threaten + infinitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t move or I\u2019ll have to use this weapon!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The burglar threatened to use the weapon if anyone moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-offer\">Offer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another verb that we can use with an infinitive. The structure is as follows: subject + offer + infinitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWould you like me to look after your cat while you\u2019re away?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My neighbour offered to look after my cat while I was away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recommend-suggest-for-reporting-suggestions\">Recommend\/Suggest (for reporting suggestions)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These verbs follow the reporting structure of recommend\/suggest + [that] + someone + verb in simple form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cYou should increase your intake of fruit and vegetables, and aim to do some cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doctor recommended that the patient eat more fruit and vegetables, and exercise three times a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHave you thought about joining a local club? This would be a great way to meet new people!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The therapist suggested her client join a local club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For negative suggestions or recommendations, add \u2018not\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t waste time playing video games. You need to finish your homework.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The father suggested his son not waste time playing video games, and instead get on with his homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/intrepidenglish.co.uk\/membership-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intrepid English Members<\/a> can learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/lessons\/reported-speech-with-other-verbs-and-structures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alternative verbs for reporting speech<\/a> in this section of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/members.intrepidenglish.co.uk\/courses\/reported-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reported Speech<\/a> course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exercise\">Exercise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Write reports for the following sentences using an appropriate verb from the list above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;Please don&#8217;t leave the door open.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;You should try the new pilates class I&#8217;ve been going to, I think you&#8217;d really like it.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;If I see anyone cheating in the exam, you will be put in detention at lunch time.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Would you like me to make you a cup of tea?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;OK, I lied. The dog didn&#8217;t eat my homework. I just forgot to do it.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry, I will be there at 3pm on the dot. You can count on me.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Who is your favourite artist?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;It definitely wasn&#8217;t me who broke the vase!&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>So, now you have added these new reporting verbs to your vocabulary, why not practise writing some example sentences? These could be imagined situations, or real examples from your life.
